Description
I have been listening to Sasha spin his tunes for the last eight years and have to say that this is probably his most accomplished mix so far. It took a few listens to realise this - at first I was surprised how minimal this set sounded compared to "Fundacion", "Involver" or even his Global Underground albums. But once you listen to it a few times (like all Sasha mixes) it sounds like a work of art and you realise the genius of the man. Some people (on amazon.com) have said that this mix is boring and uninspiring and that Sasha was better when playing epic progressive house. What these peoplemore… don't realise is that all great artists evolve and adapt their style in order to stay at the forefront of their field. Sasha has realised this and adopted an innovative electro/tech house kind of sound which is just as danceable and moving as his previous mixes.
This album is the first by Sasha to have been recorded live and sold straightaway unlike his previous albums which were produced and adapted in the studio. As a result, this isn't quite as polished as "Fundacion" or his Global Underground albums. There are crowd noises in the background and at one point at the beginning of the second disc the sound cuts out for a few seconds. Whether this was intentional or not, it doesn't take anything away from the music and is not anywhere as big a deal as some people who've reviewed this album elsewhere make out.
Both CDs flow very well and are mixed (on Ableton Live) to the usual high standard that we expect of Sasha. Highlight tracks on the first disc for me are:
Booka Shade - Night Falls
Lindstrom - I Feel Space (M.A.N.D.Y Remix)
Rusty - Body Hunter
Tomie Nevada - Meeting at the Cornfields
Personal favourite tracks on the second disc are:
Nils Noa - Monkeybreak
Joel Mull - Begun the End Has (beautiful track, my favourite on the whole album)
Tim Deluxe - Espoo? Rose
GusGus - Mallflowers
This album is really well put together and sounds cutting edge throughout, whether it be the driving tech sounds of "I Feel Space", "Meeting at the Cornfields" and "Espoo? Rose" or the more melodic tunes like "Night Falls", "Begun the End Has" and "Mallflowers". If you want to hear the defining sound of perhaps the greatest and most important DJ to have lived then you will do well to purchase this album.
