After the seismic effect of UB40s first two sutdio albums, "Singing Off" and "Present Arms", which relied heavily on their iconic, raw, rootsy reggae style, UB40 had trod water somewhat in their third studio release of original songs "UB44", atracting many accusations of "sameyness", "boring" and "one trick ponies". They came up with the perfect answer in the ultra-commercial shot at the top spot in their appealing album of cover versions of 70s reggae classics in the critically-received "Labour Of Love". Back on top and in favour with the public, they returned with what is actually quite a lowmore…-key album of band originals. Dominated by electro-synth percussion the reggae is moving rapidly away from roots and dub to the phenomenon of electro-reggae known as dancehall. Laid back grooves such as "Riddle Me" and the hit single "If It Happens Again" still feature Ali Campbell's trademark voice but the rhythms are far more synthetic and some of the raw appeal of ther early work is lost.

However, this was 1984 and the band had to move with the times. D.U.B. is still flying the flag for Astro's resident toasting and roots rhythm and "Nkomo a Go-Go" is anything but laid back. Overall, however, "Geffery Morgan" is very much an album that was indicative of reggae's direction at the time and, unfortunately, due to its laid back low-key ambience, once again attracted the same criticisms. The lack of any other reviews show that, for many, the album has been forgotten, which is a shame, because, listening to it now, some twenty-three years later, it still has an appeal.
