The Satoshi Tomiie album is definitely worth a listen, it's an interesting 'concept mix album' in that each of the discs is dedicated to a facet of Tomiie's life and career. Disc one is the 'club' mix cd, disc two his 'studio' work and disc three his 'home' cd is influences and music he likes to listen to. By far my favourite disc is disc two the 'studio mix'.Disc one is interesting enough, and the tunes are well selected and are a nice bouncy mix of Satoshi Tomiie's current turntable picks. As he says himself in the sleeve notesmore… though what works well in a club doesn't always translate to the living room of the listener. I'd agree with that because there's nothing in this mix that really stands out, it becomes a bit like audio wallpaper and whilst I didn't like any of the tracks per se there was nothing that got me excited either.Disc two on the other hand is a fabulous mix of Tomiie's remix and production work, so there's stuff in there from Kosheen, Hybrid and even a remix he's done of Papua New Guinea which is great to hear again. This disc has some real highlights and gets better with repeated listening, I really like it and would recommend this album on the strength of this CD alone. Also if you don't have it 'Full Lick' Satoshi Tomiie's 2000 album is an absolute gem of an album.Disc three is to me a bit of a mystery, it's like one of the "choice" or "Back to mine" collections available by many other DJs and producers. The problem here is it's not dancy enough neither do the tracks sit that well next to each other. Now call me old school but since day one Renaissance mix collections have always been three (or sometimes two) discs of pure quality dance music. This disc therefore stands out like a sore thumb, it's no where near as good as say Nick Warren's "Back to mine" and consists mostly of jazzy 70s numbers which are great but out of place on a Renaissance CD in my opnion.I appreciate what Renaissance have done with their new 'three dimensional' series but whether its a format that will work I don't know. If you want something that does what it says on the tin the last two Renaissance James Zabiela CDs were both awesome.
