Description
Most of these songs have featured in the Heroes' stage act over the past year or two, and it's good to have them available on CD. The reverb on the vocals is presumably designed to give the album the energy and feel of a live show, which it does. Of the 14 tracks, extending to nearly 50 minutes' music, Pete W sings lead on 2 of them, Pete B on 2 more, with one instrumental. Albert takes the lead on the rest, including the opener, an old Coasters hit, which gets the boys off to a cracking start (the album's title is taken from a line in the song). Another stage favourite is Buddy Mize's '(Justmore… Enough To Keep Me) Hangin' On', (a hit for Waylon), with some nice backing harmony from Pete B. The other Pete then takes over the vocals for a rollicking version of Bobby Charles's 'I Can't Quit You', a number associated with Delbert McClinton (as is 'Everytime I Roll The Dice'). Next up is a country shuffle reading of 'Brand New Heartache' owing more to the Burritos than the Evs., and Gerry Hogan then leads the workout on 'Pulling It Off' (iffy title, boys!). Pete B takes the vocals on the ballad 'Fool's Gold', one of 2 original (and creditable) co-writes from bassist Brian Hodgson. The other is the more up-tempo 'She's So Hot', sung by Albert. On stage Albert switches to mandolin for 'Man Of Constant Sorrow', a traditional song given a new lease of life by the film 'Oh Brother...'. On this one we get the Eagles' Timothy B. Schmidt adding backing vocals. 'Don't' an old Elvis hit, that Albert sang at the Scotty Moore and Friends: 'A Tribute To The King' sessions is another stage favourite, followed here by another on-form bluesy rocker from Pete W on '(Before I) Grow Too Old'. A highlight of any Heroes performance is when Albert takes to the piano for a ballad or two. Here we do get two - Dennis Wilson and Mike Love's tender (if obscure) ballad 'Only With You', and 'Sleepless Nights' with again, nice backing vocals from Pete B. In between, we have a bluesy 'Wake Up Screaming' from Pete B. a song that appeared on Jim Lauderdale's ace 1991 debut release ''Planet Of Love'. This latest Heroes album is a great mix of good-time rock 'n' roll, country, and r'n'b (when r'n'b meant rhythm and blues), and really gave me a lift. I look forward the the next time the Heroes are back this way again.
