Do not xpect to hear a normal album in this album, it is original in it's production, rhymes and flows. That's not saying that this album is outstanding or, inversely, awful.Okay let's just get this straight: Alias is possibly one of the greatest, most intelligent emcees in the US independent scene and the world. However, he is also the most depressed emcee in the world. Finding the dark side in everything he rhymes in the albums opening track 'jovial costume''Please pass the "how are yous", Let's play whose got it worst' and it doesn't get any happier the whole album,('Inspirations passing' showsmore… Alias expressing sorrow for his lost mother, whilst 'Slow motion people' is just scary). But wait, Alias is not exactly upbeat but he is very intelligent. Fans of Divine Disappointment on Anticon will love 'Angel of Solitude', with our man rhyming from the point of view of Death('It's a cycle just like the rain that I step in time with today, It falls for the sole purpose of washing your tears away'), at the same time making a beautiful but sinister piece of hip hop. Whilst 'watching water' is just a triumph in every way (just not any of the happy ones).The beats are a mixed bag. Although Alias's production style is unlike any contemporary hip hop it's so minimal that it can get annoying (note the flutes and drums of both 'jovial costume' and 'dying to stay'), however tracks like 'Final Act' and 'Watching Water', show that he's not just using only a couple of instruments for the hell of it. The emphasis on this album is on the lyrics, that's what's intended and achieved and it souns good.Alias is not one to listen to if you wanna dance, be happy or only like hip hop a little bit. It is a required taste(like a less synthesised, more traditional version of EL-P!). However if you want to be fascinated by lyrics and reminded that hip hop really can be poetry, buy this, buy it now.
