Description

The typical Belle & Sebastian superlatives can be coupled to this suitably precocious E.P. collection, 3-6-9 Seconds of Light, which stems from the same period of fruitful creativity that brought us those other two notable E.P. releases, Dog on Wheels and Lazy Line Painter Jane. The sound here is representative of those collections, and of the albums of this era (Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister), but with a couple of minor twists... just to keep things interesting.The record opens with the melodious, A Century of Fakers, which consists of the very same backing instrumental from the earliermore… E.P. track, A Century of Elvis, this time with more emphasis on lyrical styling and vocal harmonies... resulting in a track that is pure Belle & Sebastian in sound and theme. From here we move into the most radical thing on the record with Le Pastie De La Bourgeoisie, which finds bandleader Stuart Murdoch cranking the guitars to create a sound that has all the hallmarks we associate with the group (gentle melody, cosmopolitan references to French culture and 60's pop, and so on) but with an edge more suited to contemporary rock. It also has some gorgeous interweaving vocals from Murdoch and Isobel Campbell, all adding to the song's frenzied charm.Both Beautiful and the final track, Put the Book Back on the Shelf, represent the band at their creative best, with Murdoch crafting witty and evocative little narratives that are then wrapped up in a warm, angular guitar sound to create two of the most beautiful ballads this side of mid-period Smiths... resulting in a short collection of tracks that are consistently great and/or interesting throughout. As for the other collections of this era, both Dog on Wheels and Lazy Line Painter Jane are great, though this remains my personal favourite, simply for range of ideas and the sheer quality of the songs.
