Description

This is an untidy series of 24, to say the least. Without spoiling too much, the thematic focus moves from Islamic terrorists to the Bauer family to the Russians to the Chinese. If that sounds a bit jumbled that's because it is - there isn't much of a narrative arc holding the action together and the series sprawls at times as a result.

Plus elements of this series do feel recycled from previous series. Often this isn't a problem, as the producers rework it sufficiently to make it entertaining. However, it's inescapable that the squabbling between characters in CTU, predictable twists, and ofmore… course infamous frequent torture scenes are truly tiresome.

There are also issues over the casting. The acting is generally of a very high standard and remains one of 24's strong points, but some of the casting is nevertheless off. The acclaimed Regina King fails to engage in the role of another Palmer sibling. James Cromwell disappoints in a particularly prominent role. Similarly, Eric Balfour returns as Milo from series one in a move that may initially interest long-term fans, but you can't fail to be disappointed by the complete irrelevance of his return.

Still, after six series there are actually some original ideas here that work well - Alexander Siddig as the reformed terrorist Assad and an interesting return for former President Logan in particular - and some hugely entertaining material inbetween. Although Jack's arc is messy, Kiefer Sutherland is still great. The action fans won't be disappointed with some good set pieces. The show retains the unique ability to make you care about a character immediately. And the acting is often top-notch despite some patchy casting. Powers Boothe is especially memorable as the snarling, brutish Vice President.

While this is a below-par season of 24, it's not it's worst and and is still a damn sight better than similar shows out there. The likes of Heroes and Battlestar Galactica are winning the plaudits but are in their relative infancy compared to the now six years old 24. Lost is falling apart in it's third season. 24 season six may frustrate some long-term fans but ultimately it's far more good than bad, and is always a good bet for a new fan. In short, it will easily entertain more than it will disappoint.
