Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (2008) R2 Japanese Retail DVD
Description
Gran Turismo is one of the franchise games that elevated the Sony PlayStation 2 from an average console to a gaming phenomenon. People weren't just blown away by the quality of the racing experience and the number of different vehicles -- they were also dumbfounded by the sheer graphical brilliance of the games, which have continued to be the benchmark for racing simulators, generation after generation.

If you've played Gran Turismo 4, you'll feel right at home taking control of Gran Turismo HD since very little has changed. The only difference, of course, is that HD is being built for the soon-to-be-released Sony PlayStation 3. It's no surprise then, that the key selling point for the next edition of Gran Turismo focuses once again on wowing gamers with its realistic visuals. Running for the first time in 1920x1080 progressive scan mode, the game is a sight to behold in all its HD glory. Standing back and watching the action is like watching the Speed channel -- it's just that realistic.
Unfortunately, only a smattering of details have been released about the HD version. The demo version revealed at E3 offered four tracks and seven vehicles, and offered up the most realistic background environments in the franchise's history. Thanks to the HD resolution trees, spectators, buildings, surface texture, and more were aglow with lifelike realism. There were two camera views available -- regular front bumper/fender view and the close-up chase view. Rumor has it that the A.I. powering the opposition vehicles has not been changed, and that there was no damage meter for cars bouncing off of walls (they simply slowed down). However, it is difficult to speculate about the fullness of the game, as Sony has left no clues outside of the limited demo presented at E3.
Beyond cars, the demo foretold that the HD version will deliver superbike racing. Again HD resolution extends to the motorcycle action with realistic riding positions and cornering. It is even rumored that motorcyclists may fall off their bikes in the nastiest collisions. However, it was unclear how much of a delay should be expected from the dramatic wipe-outs. Although the release of Gran Turismo HD is highly anticipated, most of the details remain shrouded in mystery as of May 2006. In fact, it is even rumored that the name hasn't been finalized, especially with the moniker "GT 5" being tossed about after the demo. Until Sony gives up the goods on the forthcoming game, you'll just have to settle for speculation and screen shots.
