Description
UFO are probably my all time favourite band, so I was interested to see what this CD was like. The CD covers 4 different sessions.Part 1 is a 3-track session for Bob Harris, from the (I think) BBC's Old Grey Wistle Test programme in October 1974. It sounds like the band were a 4-piece at that time, although a few months earlier, they had been a 5-piece with Paul "Tonka" Chapman sharing guitar duties wih Schenker. The session includes 2 tracks from their debut album "Phenomenon", and , I believe, a track that was their debut single for Chrysalis, in late '73, "Give Her The Gun". This track, withmore… it's catchy riff, and stinging Schenker solo, is a rarity, never having appeared on any album before, to my knowledge. Strong versions of the other 2 tracks, with a great version of"Rock Bottom".Part 2 is a radio session for John Peel's show from June '77. The 3 tracks are from their "Lights Out" album, and feature Paul Raymond on keyboards/guitar. The performances are excellent, although "Too Hot To Handle" suffers a bit, as the lead guitar track is drowned out in the mix.Part 3, is a live session, recorded at the Hippodrome, Golders Green, in London, in June '74. The band had been stretched to a 5-piece, not long after the "Phenomenon" album came out.Paul "Tonka" Chapman had been added, to share lead guitar duties with Michael Schenker. The 4 tracks are all from their debut album, and are spoiled somewhat by the poor sound quality. The middle 2 tracks are spoiled by a crackling sound, a bit like an old vinyl LP. I know it is sometimes difficult to remaster old analogue tape recordings onto CD, but EMI have done a poor job here. They surely could haved cleaned these tracks up better than this? Slapped wrists all round! Finally, part 4 is another live BBC session, recorded at the Paris Theatre, in London, in December '75. This is a storming set, with then new keyboard player, Danny Peyronnel. Great versions of 4 tracks from the "Force It" album. They are almost up on a par with the versions of these songs that would later appear on the live "Strangers In the Night" album. If you are already a UFO fan, you'll probably have most of these songs on other albums, but it is interesting to hear different versions of the band playing classic material. If you are new to hearing UFO, this might be a good place to start, to discover the music of one of the best melodic hard rock bands, ever. I would have given the CD 5-stars, but I've knocked a star off, due to the poor quality sound of the '74 live session.
