I would say that anyone who I know who listens to Ben Harper has discovered him through word of mouth. This is illustrated beautifully in this striking documentary behind the scenes and on stage with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. On stage, between songs, Harper asks, where people heard about them, on the radio, in magazines or through a friend. The response to the last one is deafening. This speaks volumes for the artist, the group and the type of music they create. It is not commercial rock, but it is not avant-garde. Anyone I have played it too, particularly 'Welcome to the Cruelmore… World', have been appealed to on a basic level by simple and beautifully raw music. Inspired by blues roots and his Southern California folk background, Harper crafts a new type of folk music. His distinctive use of slide guitar and his seated stage presence are far from dull to watch. Instead of diving around the stage with the usual rockstar histrionics, the focus is on the music and it's delivery. This documentary travels with the group as they travel the States and Europe on the tour that brought us the excellent 'Live from Mars' double CD. Giving an insight into the people in the band and the person behind Ben Harper. Because most people only hear about him/them through friends, there is no media engine with vast personality profiles and life stories that goes with it. All you normally have to go on is the songs on the CDs you buy. This fills in a lot of the blanks and gives a history to the group and Ben himself. One of the most touching moments is prior to playing a return home gig in Claremont, CA, Ben plays an acoustic song with his mother in the living room of the family home. This is later repeated on stage in a joint performance in front of what appears to be the entire town. The extra features on the disc are live performances, a demo session of 'Strawberry Fields Forever', the video (with optional commentaries) to 'Ground on Down' and some bootleg material from the Royal Albert Hall. All in all an arresting stand alone production as well as a useful and informative companion to 'Live from Mars'.I just wish, more than ever now, that he would come and play in South Africa!
