Description

Archives features back-material from Vancouver's Delerium, a group that rose from the ashes of Bill Leeb's industrial late 1980s group Front Line Assembly. However, his latter vehicle couldn't have been more different. The spooky, high-minded Delerium scored a worldwide hit with "Silence", featuring folkie Sarah McLachlan, and subsequently went on to attract a devoted following. This 2001 greatest-hits package consists of material culled from albums such as 1997s Morpeus--Gregorian chants and otherworldly vocals abound among classical, electronic and rock elements--but the overall feeling is doommore… and gloom on a momentous scale. Yes, Delerium have conquered the former Goth market with their pretentious titles such as "Monuments of Deceit" and prog-rock ethos to instrumentation--it's everywhere! Someone had to do it. Unfortunately, Delerium's music isn't really as moving and profound as they would have you believe, and unless you are a completist, you should stay clear of both this and their second set of Archives. --Reuben Dessay
