The Beach Boys - 20 Good Vibrations: The Greatest Hits (1995) Retail CD
Amazingly, given the number of Beach Boys compilations, there has yet to be a one-disc anthology presenting their biggest singles from "Surfin' Safari," which hit the Top Ten on some charts in 1962, to "Kokomo," a number one hit in 1988. This album attempts to fill that gap. It includes those two, as well as such chart-toppers as "Surfin' U.S.A.," "I Get Around," "Barbara Ann," and "Good Vibrations." But it fails in its mission in a number of respects. For one thing, it's only 49 minutes long — another 25 minutes of hits could have been included. For another, the choices are somewhat idiosyncraticmore…. "Catch a Wave" was never a single, much less a hit, but it's here, while "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)," a Top Ten single, is not. All the tracks except "Kokomo" are Capitol recordings from 1962 to 1966, which means later hits on other labels, notably the Top Ten "Rock and Roll Music" (1976), are missing. And in a couple of instances, the hit versions are not included: "Be True to Your School" and "Help Me, Rhonda" are significantly different album tracks, not the original singles. Finally, the sequencing is not chronological, which makes the group's stylistic changes confusing. All in all, this is not the ideal hits collection, and unless you're a big fan of "Kokomo" who happens not to own the Cocktail soundtrack, you'd be better off sticking to one or both of the Absolute Best collections or Endless Summer.
