Another in the excellent series of reissues from Andrew Hill’s 1960s Blue Note catalogue. “Judgement” was one of six albums recorded during 1964 alone, this one coming just after “Black Fire”. Each Hill Blue Note album has its own special quality and what makes this one unique is that it features a minimalist line up, led by Hill-piano and Bobby Hutcherson-vibes, with Richard Davis-bass and Elvin Jones-drums. Without Hill’s customary beautiful writing for sax/trumpet leads, the album lacks some of Hill’s usual focus and appeal; as one might expect frommore… compositions for piano and vibes, the music is fairly impressionistic and abstract. The obvious wild card here is legendary Coltrane man Elvin Jones, who might not be thought appropriate to Hill’s music in general or this album in particular, but plays with sympathetic restraint (though still managing a few trademark heavy flourishes). It was probably a relief for Elvin to get back to the cathartic drama of the Trane Quartet after the introspective rigour of this session. “Judgement” may not be the best place to start getting into Andrew Hill, but if you are already a convert this is another intriguing item to add to the collection.
