Any new Willie Nelson CD is good news. In this case it isn’t a collection of new material but an album of songs written by Cindy Walker. Though the name might not be familiar, many of the song titles will be, since her songs were recorded in the 1940s and ‘50s by such big names as Bob Wills and Eddy Arnold (in fact some were written in partnership with these too, plus the great Webb Pierce).Willie describes this collection as “A sort of country “Stardust” (his famous collection of recast pop standards)” and the description is spot-on, as this collection featuresmore… many classic country tracks of the same period. Best known are probably the Bob Wills tracks, “Bubbles in my Beer”, “Sugar Moon”, and “Dusty Skies” but “Don’t Be Ashamed of Your Age” and “Cherokee Maiden” will also be familiar to many. The voice is as sweet as ever and the arrangements are first class, with input from some great names such as Johnny Gimble on fiddle and The Jordanaires on backing vocals.There’s a nice 20 page booklet, with lots of information about Cindy Walker and full lyrics, but for some reason several pages are printed on top of photographs that make it almost impossible to read. Very strange.A nice collection – with Willie on top form. Highly recommended for fans of Texas Swing.
