For those who've never heard of Cilla Black, she was a one-hit wonder in the U.S. in the 60's, scoring a top 40 hit with "You're my World." However, in the U.K., her homeland, Ms. Black has been a popular figure there in music, television, and motion pictures. This CD compilation highlights her years at EMI, including her U.K. #1's, top 40 hits, near misses, and various album cuts. There are 27 selections in all. This is a great introduction for American listeners to discover Cilla Black, even though it's only available as an import. Included are "You're my World," "Anyone who Had a Heartmore…" (yes, the Dionne Warwick classic that Ms. Black took to number 1 in the U.K.), and "Alfie," a song closely associated with Cilla. There are also covers of well-known songs from the sixties such as the Beatles' "Yesterday," Smokey Robinson's "Goin out of my Head," and Jackie Deshannon's "What the World Needs Now." Some of the cover's however suffer from bad arrangements (You've Lost that Lovin" Feelin', for one). The best songs on here are the original ones penned especially for her, like the uptempo "Love of the Loved," written by the Beatles, and the lilting Paul McCartney ballad "It's for You." It is Cilla Black's voice that should draw listener's to this compilation. It is a strong, brassy voice (think Shirley Bassey) that adapts well to the different material she covers. She wasn't a soul balladeer like fellow U.K. native Dusty Springfield, or a hipster like Marianne Faithful. Her material is more adult contemporary, but doesn't head into bland middle of the road territory. Sophisticated and chic, this is a must for Anglo-philes everywhere, as well as those who want to hear a great singer.
