I bought this at the Las Dalias 'hippy market' bar in Ibiza after their DJ played the sublime cover of Gemma Hayes' 'Evening Sun' (Track 8) in his morning session: one of those moments when you have to find out what you're listening to and OWN it immediately.Though I bought it for that one track, the whole album has turned out to be very special - just about anything on it is up to soundtracking a 'sunset moment'. As an example, 'Manvantara', the track that follows 'Evening Sun' is an eleven minute epic that builds, grows and develops instrumentally in unpredictable loveliness.What does it allmore… sound like?Well, it features:· Lush female vocals courtesy of resident Alex Hamnede and guest Sophie Barker (of Zero 7) - who features on 'Breathe', 'Right Here' and 'Don't Look Back' - interlaced on some tracks with African vocals from band member Tchando (the effect is a little like those gorgeous Nitin Sawhney tracks like 'Homelands' and 'Sunset' that interweave English and Indian male/female vocal lines)· Ambient electronic and some 'real' orchestral backing· Chilled beats, African/Middle Eastern sounding percussion (bongos!)All very Balearic (though I believe they are Danish) but also, more rarely, really strong and interesting melodically and lyrically (themes of personal change, absence, love and loss) and very powerful emotionally, never crossing the thin line that separates much so-called 'chill out' stuff from glorified muzak. It's a really beautiful and emotive record. Hugely recommended.
