Description
After her self-titled debut album sold more than 16 million copies upon its initial 1990 release, Mariah Carey released her highly-anticipated second album, Emotions. Released in 1991, it sold only 10 million copies worldwide - a big drop from her debut album where most people expected it to top her debut, sales-wise. Thankfully, it proved not to be the end for Mariah, as albums such as Music Box and Daydream went on to sell inexcess of 20 million a-piece. This album is absolutely superb and a lot more fun and care-free than some of Mariah's later albums.Emotions begins with the single Emotionsmore… (10/10). Released in 1991, the single peaked at No.17 in the UK but was another huge US No.1 for Mariah. The song is pure pop fun with an up-tempo bassline and classic beats. And You Don't Remember (10/10) is the first of the album's many ballads - and a good one it is too. Mariah's voice on this song is excellent and the beat is very dramatic. Can't Let Go (10/10) is another classic Mariah ballad. Definitely an album highlight, Can't Let Go was the second single to be taken from Emotions and shocking didn't make it to No.1 in the US - made even more annoying, considering that it stuck at No.2 for so long! Many people absolutely adore this song, and I for one am not one to disagree - absolutely phenomenal. It's songs like this that make Mariah such a worldwide popular artist. Make It Happen (10/10) is another album highlight for me. This is one of only a few up-tempo songs from Emotions. This fact only makes you appreciate them even more, however. The song has a great beat, along with catchy verses and sing-a-long choruses. If It's Over (10/10) is one of my favourite ballads from Emotions, but many people who also have the album say they dislike it. The song begins with a powerful and driving beat that makes you realise this is such an epic song. Mariah's vocals just get better as the seconds tick away - resulting in a fantastic part where Mariah just lets go and sings her heart out for ages. You're So Cold (10/10) is another great up-tempo song. The beat on this song is very infectious and Mariah's voice is good too. "Lord only knows/Why I love you so/You're such a heartless man/I don't understand why you gotta be/Why do you need to be/So cold!" sings Mariah very slowly as an introduction. The song then breaks out into a brilliant up-tempo song - instantly catchy and very funky on first listen. So Blessed (10/10) is up next and is another superb ballad with a lullaby-style bassline, accompanied by soft and emotional beats. Mariah's vocals are quiet and content at first, but break out and become spine-tingling towards the end. I also love the way the "Heart" lyric on "You are my heart" echoes, giving the song a more epic feeling. To Be Around You (9/10) is the next song, and is a cool up-tempo number that will satisfy fans of Mariah's up-tempo material. The lyrics are not very good - too childish, but Mariah's voice and that bassline is on top-form! Till The End Of Time (9/10) is another heavy ballad with a strange but undeniably effective bassline. Mariah's vocals are great by using a echoing effect on certain words, giving it a more epic feeling like the one on So Blessed. Emotions closes with The Wind (10/10). Mariah's voice is splendid on this closing track, but the lyrics are the factor that makes the biggest impression. "The wind has taken you/You're finally at peace/So still you lie/Leaving your cares behind/The pain is gone/Gone with the spirit in your eyes/Now you're wandering around/Above us/Looking downward/As we cry," sings an emotional Mariah in the first verse. The song is obviously about the death of a loved one, yet it's hard to believe Mariah wrote these lyrics....and before any haters start saying "she didn't," she did. The woman was 21 at the time, and show extraordinary writing skills on The Wind - a superb song to close such a phenomenal album.OVERALL GRADE: 10/10Emotions is a must-have Mariah Carey album for all fans of her material. The thing that makes Mariah so unique is that she is able to sing all styles of music such as heavy ballads, fun pop and chilled-out R'n'B and pulling it off to maximum effect with her amazing five-octave vocal range. She can traverse back through time and pick out styles she used on her earlier material, before mature and modernising it to suit the styles of the present day. This is my basic reason for liking Mariah, and obviously, because of the superb and quality songs she keeps churning out.
