The studio follow-up to the hugely successful debut, 1984's "Human's Lib", finds Jones in similar mood. Although failing to achieve the prime position in British album charts (Phil Collins was keeping that for himself) this is no less of an album than it's predecessor and the four top 20 singles it produced are testament to that (five if you count "Like To Get To Know You Well" which appears here as a bonus track alongside the excellent "Bounce Right Back" - a real crowd favourite and previously only a b-side for the LTGTKYW single). At this early stage of his recording career Jones was very muchmore… a pop artist and that remains the case as far as the singles lifted from this album are concerned. His lyrics, however, tended to offer a little more than many of his contemporaries and that is as true on this album.Long before embracing Buddhism Jones was all for an uplifting lyric with a catchy hook. This time around that particular role is more than adequately filled by the likes of "Things Can Only Get Better", "Specialty" and the title track though the latter of these is a bit of a plodder.A long-standing advocate of vegetarianism Jones tackes the issue head-on with "Assault & Battery" utilising a chorus of childlike voices to deliver us the lines "Childrens stories with their farmyard favourites / On the table in a different disguise". Whilst perhaps too preachy for some the song deliveres a powerful message with a punchy musical accompaniment which complement one another perfectly.There are slightly darker (and slower) moments courtesy of "Elegy" and "Hunger For The Flesh" the former of which does drag a little and the latter of which is drenched in atmosphere which was still further heightened when performed live for those fortunate enough to see a live show around the time of Howard's mid-Eighties peak.In all what we have here is a solid album. A collection of decent songs, some admittedly better than others, and though sounding a little dated at times it is nonetheless a fine album when taken as a whole. If you were a fan of the Eighties but passed this album by at the time then it's certainly worth the price you'll pay for a little nostalgia. If you've recently become wrapped up in the Eighties revival and weren't old enough to have known this when it was first released then this will give you a fairly decent snapshot of what it was all about. Not his greatest work but better than most of the competition of the time
