Description
About 5 years ago, when Duncan James wasn't a regular in West End musicals and Dane Bowers wasn't a regular brawler at Funky Buddha (actually, on second thoughts, he's always done that), boybands had to all follow the same rulebook; they had to be all sickly sweetness and light, their songs had to be about lovin' you a day and a night girl, and they had to be styled in distressed jeans and loudly coloured t-shirts while doing frankly questionable dance routines - in short; they were puppets.
So as you can imagine, many scoffed at the idea of anything remotely rough around the edges - more specificallymore…, four guys picking up guitars/drumsticks, writing their own stuff, dressing differently etc. But over three multi platinum albums, 12 consecutive Top 10 hits and 7 #1's, it's a formula that's proved to work (and not go stale) for McFly.
Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Harry Judd and Dougie Poynter have spent nearly half a decade bringing something to British pop that is wholly unique yet with a widespread appeal - something few pop bands achieve successfully. They blend the catchy choruses and harmonies of pure, 21st century pop in with contemporary rock sounds from the 60's, 70's, 80's and a bit of the 90's for good measure as well.
Their varied musical influences, which cast nets as wide as The Who, Green Day and Queen, is evident on all guns blazing epics like "Five Colours In Her Hair", "I Wanna Hold You" and "Star Girl", toe tapping mid tempos like "All About You" and "Sorry's Not Good Enough" and faithful covers of Jellyfish's "Baby's Coming Back" and Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now", as well as new single "The Heart Never Lies" in which you feel overwhelmingly positive vibes of a big, uncluttered, happy peace anthem made for festivals a la Snow Patrol's "Chasing Cars".
What is refreshing too, is that, in an age where pop bands tend to flit endlessly from songwriter to songwriter in search of another hit, every single song on here (except the covers) has come from the pens and imaginations of all four members, resulting in a flawless body of work that leaves you in amazement at the effort, inventiveness and talent put into them. Indeed, it's left them with some impressive press clippings from Smash Hits and Top Of The Pops (both of which they've outlasted) to the Guardian, who went so far as to say, in a review of their 2005 Wonderland tour, they were "the ultimate 21st century rock band."
And, though their name is often met with either schznoid levels of decibel crashing screams from their younger audience or dismissive moaning and groaning from purse lipped purists and fans of "real guitar music", it really shouldn't put you off either way. McFly are proof, if anything, that pop need not be a dirty word, as long as it's embraced in the correct manner. Which is, of course, precisely what they've done.
