Okay, so you can't really avoid the fact that you have to like the film in the first place to appreciate the soundtrack, but it is nonetheless a great listen. It's one of those soundtracks which has a selection of songs that suits a variety of moods and has the added quality of mixing the contemporary, the school disco reminders and some particularly effective reworkings of classics. The Afghan Whigs' cover of Barry White's "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe" is a good example of this and without doubt one of the best songs on the soundtrack. The combination of tracks by artists like themore… Afghan Whigs, Satchel, Ween and the Spinners shows that a soundtrack can achieve a good blend of rock, blues, country and pop classic that will impress a range of generations. It also shows that it is possible to get the full musical complement of the film onto one CD without losing the film's atmosphere, and that the soundtrack is not so dominated by one artist that the film requires two versions of the soundtrack to show the range of music- The Virgin Suicides suffered a little from this despite the quality of both soundtracks. Having old favourites like "Sweet Caroline" can never really do any wrong in my opinion, and rounds off the soundtrack perfectly. If you haven't seen the film then it might seem a little pointless for me to be reviewing this for your benefit and pretty stupid of me to allow for the fact that you might not have in the first place, but one of the rather strange charms of this soundtrack is that it can be appreciated away from its raison d'etre. It is actually a plus factor for this soundtrack that the film didn't do soo well that the soundtrack became really overplayed and consequently very dated very quickly like the Pulp Fiction or Trainspotting soundtracks. Superficially its an acquired taste, but like the film, its a quiet little gem that doesn't have a dud track on it.
