Description
After the fantastic concept album 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh', Maiden planned their follow up album. Adrian Smith wqas 'let go' after he became more3 focused on a solo project (ASAP), but was shortly replaced by excellent Gillan guitarist Janick Gers. Most other Amazon reviewers seem to be unimpressed with this album, but I don't think so.
This was the first Maiden album for 4 years that didn't include keyboards or synthesisers and had suddenely adopted a very dark and sinister tone. A tone that fits perfectly with the new Maiden. The heavy guitars seem to have waited a while to be drawn into Maidenmore…, and were surtainly ready to perform. Also, Bruce Dickinson experiments with a darker voice which helps create an excellentely sinister mood, that he will use until his leave in 1993.
The first track, 'Tailgunner', is a quick paced song, which really helps you get into the mood of the album. It is unfotunate, then, how the next song, 'Holy Smoke', is probably the worst song Maiden have done with Dickinson, which I can't bear to listen to. Fortunately, the title track brings you back into it, with a smooth melody which contrasts with Dickinsons sinister vocals.
The following songs are a bit weaker, but are not necessarily bad, just aren't as memorable as the others! Also included is the last song written by Bruce and Adrian until 1997 (on Dickinson's 'Accident of Birth'), 'Hooks in You'.
The album concludes with two ecellent tracks. 'Bring Your Daughter to The Slaughter', is a sinister track, which remains the only Maiden single to reach No. 1, and uses an excellent mixture of heavy guitars and excellent vocals. It was originally going to be put on Bruce's first solo album, 'Tattooed Millionaire', as a song for the soundtrack of the fifth 'Nightmare on Elm Street' film, but I guess its done a lot better as a Maiden song. The final song, 'Mother Russia', is the most underrated, but I actually think its one of the best songs on the album!
