Description
I am not a hardcore Leann Rimes fan but have have appreciated her since she exploded with "Blue" at 13 to her very underrated "Twisted Angel", which brings us to LeAmnn's first greatest hits collection just as she hits her 21st birthday. There are those who like "country" LeAnn while others like "pop" LeAnn. I happen to like both as long as the material suits her and she delivers the goods. I think that there is room for an artist to cross the lines between any genre as long as he/she remains true to him/herself. As far as Leann is concerned, I think that she needs to spend some time figuring outmore… how to continue to showcase her voice and to keep finding or writing material that is worthy of her as her biggest challenge (in my opinion) is that, whether country, pop, or dance, if the beats and words are not there, it's hard to get blood from a stone. With regard to this collection, which Curb yet again manages to advertise it as if it were a competitor's release, it's not a bad beggining, with the exception that it ignored several key songs from "Twisted Angel", a couple from "I Need You", and should have cut out some of the filler, which in my opinion includes:"Commitment", "The Light In Your Eyes", an even more tepid version of "You Light Up My Life" than the one sung by Debbie Boone (but to be fair the song was a hit and should be here even if I don't like it. Also, the new songs, with the exception of "We Can" are not strong and when that happens LeAnn just seems to be going through the motions. "O Holy Night" seems out of place.Everything else (that's 13 songs) is great (and I discovered several songs, including "Big Deal", her cover of "Crazy", among others) so if you took out the weak songs you'd have a full fledged 4 star review as more is not always better; notwithstanding and in order to create my own 5 star collection, I've made myself a mix with the 13 songs that I liked and added "One Of These Days", "Wound Up", "The Safest Place", "Trouble With Goodbye", "Damn", "Suddently" and I closed my collection with the amazing "Love Is An Army". I love the way the song just ends. Very nice touch.I do recommend that casual fans purchase this and buy "Twisted Angel" and you will have my choices for the best of LeAnn. Again as long as the material is there LeAnn will hit a home run, time and time again. I'd love to see her tackle some bluesy country and some more of the strong dance numbers that she began to play with. Also, Curb Records (which is holding LeAnn to a lousy contract that she signed when she was just a kid) seems to find a way to market LeAnn and work with her in a constructive way so that they'll both be on the same page. They can start by building relationships with strong song-writers and by learning to market LeAnn. I hope that the next release is as good as "Twisted Angel".
