Description

Set apart in many ways from the body - much of it marvellous, all of it at least interesting - of Jarre's work, Revolutions is arguably his best studio album, certainly it is his most immediately accessible. This is because it is the closest the composer ever came to a (prog) rock release - even handing over the performing lead to veteran Shadows guitar-maestro Hank Marvin on the terrific, driving single, London Kid. The rest of the album is diverse, yet somehow hangs together as a piece. The huge opening Industrial Revolution section is engaging stuff, if more of its time (the late 80s - themore… era of RoboCop et al.) than suggestive of the turn of the C.18th! Counterpart to this is the fluid ethnicity, notably North African, found elsewhere - including in the familiar title track, where it's married with a punctuation of blunt, 'computer voice' soundbites. And after Ron's Piece on Rendezvous, this album contains probably Jarre's most beautiful composition: September (a tribute to one Dulcie September, a human rights activist) - lovely, lyricless vocals to a moving melody. Revolutionary, Revolutions may not be (not even for 1988), but it's a winning album that I'm still playing a decade and a half later.
