Is it just me or is everyone re-recording their old albums nowadays? The latest to jump on a bandwagon that should not exist are thrash legends Sodom. Now, Sodom rule. They are one of the finest thrash metal bands ever to grace the genre, and every self respecting thrash fan should have albums like "Obsessed By Cruelty" and "Better Off Dead" in their collections.
But it all began back in 1984 with their debut EP "In The Sign Of Evil", a release that was one of thrash metals groundbreakers and rule makers. Those 5 tracks were benchmarks for many of the bands that were to follow, and even thoughmore… Sodom didn't manage to capitalise on their early form (largely due to their unwillingness to compromise), they've still managed to carve out a lengthy career, fronted by the legendary Tom Angelripper.
So, what's the point, I hear you cry? Well, not only does this new version feature seven tracks that were written at the time but never recorded, but it also sees Grave Violator and Chris Witchhunter returning to the fold to complete the job they began 23 years ago. Like all these re-recordings, it lacks the sesne of wonder and astonishment that the originals brought to bear, but Sodom haven't bothered with any of that pesky musical progression. No, what you get is hard, fast, brutal thrash metal, just the way Satan intended.
Their quality assurance was pretty bang on first time around, with the original EP material of 'Blasphemer', 'Witching Metal', 'Burst Command 'til War', 'Sepulchural Voice' and 'Outbreak Of Evil', probably the best on offer. Although a case could be made for 'Bloody Corpse' sneaking in ahead of 'Burst Command 'til War'. It's a raw, virulent noise, and one that all thrashers should experience. I found the revised running order a bit annoying and I'm still not sure of its musical relevance, but that didn't stop me snapping on a neck brace and going metal thrashing mad.
