Recorded in the late 80's, naturally this live CD concentrates mainly on the electro/rock/funk blend Numan was so into at that time.Supporting a strong album in the era (1988's Metal Rhythm) and a brief rejuvination courtesy of a new recording contract, this tour, particularly this night at London's Dominion Theatre saw Numan raising the roof off the venue. Luckily I was there to experience this first hand and Numan's 88 gig at the Dominion remains one of the most thrilling concerts I've ever been to.A bit of a shame then that the slick impact of the Metal Rhythm materialmore…, a crisp blend of crunching drums, hard bass lines, cool synth washes, overlayered with powerful rock/funk guitars and diva backing vocals doesn't quite transfer so well into the living room.The strength of this album really lies in the quality of the older hits, which in retrospect is a bit telling to say the least. The synth classics Cars, Are friends electric?, We are glass etc, are all executed with huge arrangements making the purchase of this album a very worthy one indeed.The lesser known psuedo industrial/pop/funk of I can't stop and Creatures although fun all those years ago, best forgotten.The creative high of Metal Rhythm at the time only served to take Numan on a wrong turn and although he tried replicate that albums productive impact with the following albums, Outland and Machine and soul, they saw him holding back. The result was they were neither good commercial funk nor good Numan albums. Thank god the complete rethink that resulted in 94's Sacrifice has taken him in the more Numanesque territory he is now.Consequently The Skin Mechanic is a kind of artefact to a brief period in which Numan and his dwindling legions of fans thought they could see a light at the end of the tunnel. It would be a few years before the light of day revealed it was only a mirage. Such is the nature of pop music and as pop music goes The Skin Mechanic despite the inherent problems of its times is still a very good CD.
