Description
I saw an advance screening of the film 2 weeks ago, and I can honestly say I was blown away; I only went as my dad had a spare ticket, but I'm so glad I did!. I've never been a big fan of Keira Knightley but she is stunning both in looks and acting ability in Atonement. James McAvoy is excellent as usual, bringing real depth and humility to the character of Robbie. All three actresses playing Briony excel, especially the young Saoirse Ronan.
The plot concerns aspiring young writer Briony Tallis, and is set over the course of the years immediately preceeding and including WWII. The film startsmore… at the Tallis family's country house.Briony's sister Cecilia has just started a fledgling romance with Robbie, which is tragically cut short after Briony accuses Robbie of a crime he didn't commit. The action then shifts to wartime Britain, with Robbie having joined the army as an alternative to prison. Briony is now 18 and has followed her sister into nurse training in London. Her sister Cecilia doesn't want anything to do with her, and this weighs heavily on her mind. The action flits between her in London, and Robbie in France. He becomes seperated from his troop and has to make his way to the beaches to go home.
I obviously won't spoil the ending, but if you haven't read the book, then expect a major twist, and justification as to why the book & film are called Atonement.
I cannot recommend this film enough, it'll make you laugh, cry, and all in all completely captivate you. The time flew by, I was so enthralled by all the actors - simply superb. It's such an intelligent, thought provoking film; it manages to deal with the horrors of war in a subtle, understated way. The scene of the beach landings is spectacular; it was shot in one go, and I found myself holding my breath as I took all the action in. The only drawback to the film is that it may leave you slightly depressed, it is an emotionally charged film, and the ending is rather deflating. However, please don't let that deter you from seeing this film, it is outstanding, a real British triumph!
