Description

The format for this film seemed familiar.
Slacker (but happy go lucky) boy meets attractive girl. Slacker boy attempts to improve his slacker ways in order to bump uglies with attractive girl and beat achieving boy (who despite being achieving, manages to be achieving in a condesending, arrogant, bad guy way. With loyal sidekick). Slacker boy at first fails to impress attractive girl. Achieving, yet bad-guy boy appears to be winning. Slacker boy starts to shine, thus iniating a battle with achieving boy, and at the same time alienating his old slacker buddies. The crux of the film, he completleymore… alienates and loses his old slacker buddies, he loses the attractive girl when she finds out his master plan and the battle of the slacker vs acheiver goes down to the final day/match. Cue the last day and in an attempt to offset this fast becoming cliché of a story and slacker's plans do not immediately go to plan but he is the ultimate winner of love, friendship, status & life in general. Smacks of familiarity? I thought so.

This routine for a film is becoming ever popular. Yes you could shift the set from supermarket to dodgeball court/ gym (er dodgeball) or a high school (american pie). One could even delve in to the 1980's for inspiration (teen wolf?). All have slight variations on this theme. I mean crikey - this must be a concurrent underlying theme to god knows how many soaps, teen tv series, kids cartoon shows. I guess I really shouldn't be surprised. But for this reason it did not shine as an original comedy. Despite me not having seen a film set completley in a supermarket before.

Now Employee of the month wasn't all bad- it had funny moments. Some laugh out loud moments. It was a dumb american comedy which if you expected nothing more - you wouldn't be disapointed. Even enjoy it.

On to the cast
Dane Cook aka zack the slacker. He was actually a genuinely funny guy. You could tell his comedian roots, the quips flowed, seemed at times unscripted, he held it together - no faults in performance.
Jessica simpson. Well to be honest there are a lot of actresses that could have filled the role better, but I guess the film needed a household name - most not having heard of Dane Cook. For those wall climbing, horndog whippersnappers that buy a film PURELY for seeing jessica simpson, a) rethink your criteria for picking films. b) you will be disappointed.

Yes that is the guy in the background doing something with passports in men in black. Who? Exactly.

This film for me is stuck in limbo, a way from the worst film I've seen, but even further away from me classifying it as a good film. 2 points for being a novel setting of a supermarket.
