Released in 2005 in america but only this week in ireland 30 seconds to mars second album is both pleasing and frustrating on the first few spins,there is certainly improvements to the bands overall sound ranging from jared letos vocals improving,better songwriting with regards to lyrics and the band sound more solid with what is expected of them all round but thats not to say that these are the best songs the boys have ever written,there is a sense that the latter part of the alum is slightly number and playing it safe and pretty much three ballads close the album,certainly that is a sign thatmore… 30 seconds arent gripping the hunger and rage like reflexes of their debut,however in saying that this is still a 3.5 out of 5 album as pretty much all is catchy,some parts predictable yes,verse,chorus,verse,chorus,middle eight,chorus,chorus style of song,yes indeed but there is no harm in this album and all will stay with you soon after you hear this.
The album opens with the truly excellent,spine tingling rock anthem 'attack',jareds scream is great here and the spacey influence of keyboard remains from the first album to give this song a really classy sense of belonging,but with that comes the first and last real venomous track and thats a shame,thats not to say that the rest water off in comparison,'a beautiful lie ' and 'the kill' both offer solid riffs that can cause the hair on the back of your neck to melt away.The albums fourth track 'was it a dream' is again a good track but similarities to the cure spring to mind mixed in with the smiths which showcase the bands ability to write a darker song of sorts but that emphasises that this is more of a modern day rock album than hard rock or metal.The remaining tracks never really take off but like i stated ,they all do their job and this is an easy album to listen too,very catchy but i dont think this is the natural follow up their pristine debut,this will be a success though and i have no problem with that whatsoever.
