I picked this up for less than a tenner and at that price was rightly pleased. This is a mindless and very derivative blaster - what I expected and what I wanted! Reminded me of Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter though with less padding (boring bits!), so yes game time will be short for most gamers. It's from Midway, developers behind The Suffering and Psi-Ops: Mindgate Conspiracy, both of which I loved.You play the David Duchovny voiced lead role as a special forces soldier sent in to the Area 51 secret base...a strange alien infection has taken hold...your mates won't last long...andmore… you really should know the rest by now. You start with a pistol, soon grab a machine gun, occasionally dual wield (when spare guns and ammo are a plenty), switch when you can to a meaty shotgun and pick up a sniper rifle midway. The story is revealed through the occasional (and skip-able!) cut scene - most of these use the game engine but major plot points, including an extended intro and outro, are quite nice hi-res cg movies. These movies are 'extras' that are unlocked on the front end menu as you progress in the game. A twist in the gameplay is the ability to play as an infected alien/zombie thingy with a very weird and fuzzy view of the world, along with different weapons/health - a little like the transformation capability in The Suffering, though this is strictly a first first affair. To be honest, more of a gimmick - a bit like wanting to be the Marine, not Alien or Predator in a previous classic.There's no save game option but a check point system is used quite sensibly - there's plenty of them, a la Halo. This game had that just one more go appeal for me with plenty of challenging sections that make you want to try once more, only throwing a grenade as well next time...There's a lot of fun to be had here for the 8+ hours it'll take to complete and with a decent graphics card (I recently upgraded to a 6800 GT) the very consoley graphics come into their own with some nice fire effects and lighting. It may not be rocket science and could certainly do with more variety in the adversaries department but more than once this thing made me jump and shift in my seat and you've got to love a game with bad guys that leap at you! And Powers Boothe!Recommended when it's going cheap.
