Finally, after resting too long on the dubious laurels of Helpyourselfish, DAD are back with an effort worthy of their legacy. Whereas Helpyourselfish failed in every way to live up to their highly versatile talent, Simpatico brings Scandinavia's only worthwhile metal effort back to its erstwhile glory. The band opens beautifully, with the soft ballad Empty Heads. The song is eminently listenable, featuring thoughtful and well-crafted lyrics that elevate a beautiful melody to new levels. Most metal bands can pull off an anthem or two without a hitch. The true proving ground of metal talent comesmore… in the writing of ballads. That's where the run-of-the-mill metal effort collapses into boy-band clichés and embarrassing crooning. DAD pulls of efforts worthy of the Stones, even at the peak of their career. The rest of the album meets the high standard of the first song, alternating between make-your-ears-bleed-metal and smooch-with-your-girlfriend ballads. It's the perfect mix. Something for the boys and something for the girls. And the most incredible feature of them all is the persistently high quality of the lyrics. Simpatico is a gem that has been to long overlooked. It's usually scorned due to the all too easily acceptable fallacy that a band is only decent in its early years. With this album DAD proves that they can do better than Helpyourselfish, they prove that they are worthy of the big league and they prove that a mature band can easily outstrip the inexperienced enthusiasm of modern day youthful kiddy bands.
