Description

As with Fourplay's earlier work, this recording has a good range of instrumental song styles that showcase the writing talents of each of the Fourplayers: Bob James, Larry Carlton, Nathan East and Harvey Mason. The exception to this is Sting's Fields of Gold which opens the album, James and Carlton sharing the melody on piano and guitar respectively, with breathy voices filling out the background. In addition to his impressive 'scat' vocals/playing (on Rozil), East does a passable job of singing on the titletrack Journey, a number he also wrote that is reminiscent of Eric Claptonmore…. James, meanwhile, who penned three of the songs, shows his usual flair for varied arrangements and likeable melodies. Drummer Mason contributes just one song - the appealing ballad Rozil, and Carlton contributes two tunes and his thoughtful, bluesy guitar. On the down side, none of the musicians seem to stretch themselves much. But on the whole, it's a solid achievement, effective at evoking a certain kind of mood.
