Ed Rush and Optical are two of the UK's baddest (i.e., most consistently excellent) junglists. The Original Doctor Shade is their third studio album and continues their mission to create breathtaking dancefloor music that doesn't care a jot for compromise. Their music to date has been notable for its fiercely tumultuous riddims, bulging, bellicose basslines and deep, penetrative funk factor--and the new joint is no different. Of all the Ed Rush and Optical albums, Dr Shade is arguably the most accomplished. It's certainly the most diverse, barrelling it's way unapologetically through an impressivemore… range of flavours and styles. There's car-chase funk ("Bullit"), collaboration with UK hip-hop crew The Scratch Perverts ("Get Ill") and--gasp!--even a house tune. Track titles such as "Hacksaw", "Heads Will Roll" and "Hammerhead" give you the idea that there's an underlying abrasiveness--and there is. But there's also oodles of rollin' flavour to round it out. --Paul Sullivan
