The Rolling Stones - Under Cover (1994) Retail CD
I have to be honest, of all The Stones' albums I own (all of them), this is the one I play least. I struggle to identify and/or remember the tracks. Having said that, upon re-listening it proves to be an interesting mix of rock riffs, white reggae and white funk and a nice progression from "Some Girls" and "Emotional Rescue" (excusing "Tattoo You" from that sequence as it was made up of tracks recorded largely before "Some Girls"). The title track is an absolute nailed-on killer and possibly the band's best single cut from most of the 1980s, carrying a blatant political message which was somewhatmore… unusual for The Stones, however many of the other tracks contain lewd, sado-masochistic references which was not so rare.
"Too Much Blood" seems to be an "objection" to violent movies such as "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" with some positively laughable semi-spoken parts from Jagger. This is possibly the silliest track the band ever laid down. Overall, though, there is a good "hot afternoon" groove to this album, "Feel On Baby" is white reggae at its best and the album's closer, "It Must Be Hell" is a stormer, complete with (surely) the prototype for Michael Jackson's "Black Or White" riff. "Pretty Beat Up" has an insistent rock/funk groove and some great sax in the middle to end part of the song, while "Too Tough" is what you would expect from The Stones, a chunky rocker. "She Was Hot" is similar, with added lascivious lyrics.
Overall, worth a re-listen if you have it and worth investing in at the current price.
