Description
This is a very nicely made art film, quite different in feel from the sort of music documentaries or live concert videos that incorporate flashing lights, upward camera angles and camera sweeps that make you feel a bit dizzy. Throughout, there are long, leisurely tracking sequences that compliment the feel of the music which includes some of the best of the enigmatically atmospheric early Pink Floyd. A favourite sequence is the slow pan across the back of the huge bank of speakers to Roger Waters' bassline in Echoes part 1.Another nice technique is to cut all the band together in a tight groupmore…, with back projections of close-ups of the band and artifacts from the ancient Pompeii site - a nice nod to Pink Floyd's use of back projections in their mid-60s gigs. The night scenes are very effective, with a mass of lights like fairy lights, and I also like the effect of slowly panning round the equipment stands. They look like a mass of shiny little trees. I did say art work - its very well thought out and the camerawork actually creates a lot of atmosphere, rather than just recording an event. It's shot in strong light, with well chosen footage of the ancient Pompeii site and artifacts and with some spectacular volcanic footage. Visually and musically, it makes a coherant piece which is dramatic, grand, strange, dynamic and ambitious. And just in case it runs away with its own grandeur, it has some very funny moments with some band chat and recording in the studio, some of which is daft and mundane, but it makes me laugh:-Nick Mason is obsessed with getting pie WITHOUT THE CRUST, Rick Wright is 'unavailable for comment' but gives us some questionable jumpers, Roger Waters is clearly relaxed and on fine satirical form, particularly on the subject of sibilance, and there's more than a bit of ironic humour in some of David Gilmour's contributions. Another favourite bit is his comment "don't worry about that (feedback)...........where would rock & roll be without feedback". And if you ever, at some point, had a picture of Roger Waters on your wall, you have to check this video out!I would also recommend Pink Floyd buffs checking out "Pink Floyd - London 66-67" which is an interesting snippet of London life in the mid-60s and a chance to glimpse what the earliest Pink Floyd gigs must have been like.
