There are few bands on this great planet that have a reputation for sleaze that even comes close to that of MOTLEY CRUE. The legendary American rockers turned the rock world upside down last year when they announced the surprise reunion of original four members Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Mick Mars and Nikki Sixx (for a start it's a miracle that they're all still alive!)



'Carnival of Sins' is a document of the ultra successful worldwide tour which followed the reunion and is certainly a value for money package with 23 songs packed onto the double disc collection.



Mirroring most of the livemore… shows from the tour, the first half of the show (featured on Disc 1) concentrates almost entirely on the band's earlier material with classics 'Too Young to Fall in Love' and 'Looks That Kill' present. The production is loud and clear, with the audience sounding like they're having a blast. Tommy Lee's drums sound better than ever and his performance confirms his reputation as one of the best drummers in rock and roll history.



The latter half of the show (featured on Disc 2) is almost a 'Best of' with highlights of the band's material from the 1989 classic 'Dr.Feelgood' album onwards. Also, thrown in for good measure are the covers 'Helter Skelter' (Beatles) and 'Anarchy in UK' (Sex Pistols) and also two brand new tracks 'Sick Love Song' and 'If I Die Tomorrow', both of which are good enough to stand up to the rest of the material on offer.



By his recent standards, Vince Neil's performance is not bad at all with him sounding like a strangled cat on only the odd track (sorry Vince!). Mick Mars plays a blinder, especially when you consider the man is a cripple. His solo's aren't quite as fluent as the heyday, but he still manages to hit all the notes and does a cracking job on all the lead riffs.



I've never been a fan of overdubs. Whats the point of a doing a live album if you're going to overdub in the studio? There aren't any immediately obvious overdubs here, but most of the backing vocals (particular for the post 'Shout At The Devil' era tracks) are from backing tapes that were used on the night. For me, not ideal, but when you're in the audience, you don't care!



For the MOTLEY fans out there, 'Carnival of Sins' will be an essential purchase and it won't dissapoint as a well-produced reflection of some great live performances from a band who've been to hell, but who are now back and on top of the world. For me, not quite as good as their previous live double disc 'Entertainment or Death', but certainly a valid alternative and stone proof that the MOTLEY lads are still fully capable of kicking butt!
