Bad news first - this is a concept album. Ohhhh Deeeaarrrr... But wait! It's a concept album full of really good tunes! Most of the lyrics actually make sense!Okay, rewind... Why is this one of my favourite albums?1) Because when this good ol' Canadian power trio are on their game, they really can put a big tick in the box marked "Rock". Several of the tracks on this album feel written for playing LOUD, just to enjoy the groove they get into. However, that's true of almost every other Rush album, so we come to:2) Because the concept here is a fundamental aspect of human existence and they framemore… it as a live issue, not some dead philosophical construct. In a nutshell, EVERY SINGLE DECISION YOU MAKE CHANGES THE REST OF YOUR LIFE FOREVER. (Disclaimer: if you believe in an omnipotent being who directs everything you do, this is not the album for you.) (Disclaimer to the disclaimer: if you believe in an omnipotent being who does NOT direct everything you do, but is still interested in what you do anyway, this album works just fine.)This record seethes with the peril and reward of Choice. We all get dealt our hand in the card game of Probability, which always pays out to someone and never lets you place your bets a second time. Choose well, and you can make of your life the most it can be. Choose badly, and you will never, ever get another chance. Oh, and in a line from an older Rush song - "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."That's all very well, but this is intended to be an album of rock music in the genre "popular". Existentialist philosophy does not often feature in those charts. However, I am happy to report that, although this is not Rush's finest hour musically, there is still plenty of seriously good music here. Occasionally it all comes together, most completely on "Bravado" - a song which features both the achingly poignant line "We will pay the price, but we will not count the cost" and some of this band's best ever melody writing.If you generally like Rush's stuff, or have a taste for intelligent rock music, I think there's a good chance you'll like this album. If this record gels with the way you look at the world, it may have a totally disproportionate effect on you, causing you to rate it as one of the best albums anywhere ever.
