Description
you either GET what the Chems are trying to do or you dont. Yes its different to previous albums, yes it has a bit of an indie feel on some tracks, yes it is more electro in places, but YES it is the Chems still on form 13 years after Exit Planet Dust.
I love the older albums but it would be pointless for them to stand still and not try different styles. They manage to produce music which on first hearing sounds pretty mainstream and commercial, but if you listen carefully you will hear the subversive nature of the Chems - all the strange messed up sound effects and psychedelic noises. Anyonemore… who has seen them live will understand what I mean - and this album has some tunes that are gonna sound MASSIVE live (cant wait till Glastonbury next week!). Heres my track by track review:
1/No Path To Follow - Just an short intro, not much to review really!
2/We Are The Night - Great upbeat housey tune, makes a change from the usual big beat opening tracks on Chems albums
3/All Rights Reversed - Future single I reckon, really good vocals from the Klaxons
4/Saturate - The albums first big moment for me, awesome riff married to dirty minimal electro beats with great percussion fills, this tune will kick butt live
5/Do It Again - The single, and insanely catchy, this will work well on the dancefloor
6/Das Speigel - Really interesting little tune, very melodic and almost childlike (with samples of babies laughter) but works well. I like it!
7/The Salmon Dance - At first I was undecided about this tune, I felt it reminded me too much of "Fish" by Mr Scruff, but I'm growing to really like it, it provides some light relief in the middle of the album which is needed
8/Burst Generator - Another big highlight, this tune sounds like they've made it with live festival performances in mind. With layers of distorted guitar washing over a pumping 4/4, this is one of those tunes that whilst it sounds great on the album will sound mind bendingly better live
9/A Modern Midnight Conversation - I absolutely love this tune, a wonderful 80s electro style bassline with cowbells and a blissed out vocal sample, this tune will work well for those sparkly 3am moments
10/Battle Scars - Still warming to this tune, bit too dark lyrically for my taste and the beats are bit too simple, but it does kick off towards the end and I'm sure this one is a grower
11/Harpoons - Lovely chill out tune, short and sweet, reminds me of Ozric Tentacles' more ambient work
12/The Pills Wont Help You Now - As usual the Chems close an album with a big epic tune, this one doesnt disappoint, it may not be full on europhic like "Surface to Air" was but instead treads an interesting line between downbeat reflective lyrics and uplifting redemptive music, the climax of the tune towards the end will bring a tingle up your spine I guarantee that.
Overall very impressed (although could have done with a blistering techno tune in there somewhere). Not in the same league as "Dig Your Own Hole" or "Surrender" but then we cant expect them to ever reach those dizzy heights again. Instead we've got a solid offering from a now legendary act and now I cant wait for the next album!
