This album is a little bit bonkers, really. The diary entries that can be found in the accompanying booklet explain the ideas behind each song...we go through the daily pains of a girl who has unloving parents and uncaring friends. Completely cheesy, really, but a nice novelty! As far as themes go, it's very interesting to see After Forever opting for real life situations as an influence rather than fantasy/dark ideas.Some slightly dodgy lyrics, it has to be said, especially in my favourite song, "Through Square Eyes", about the dangers of playing computer games and watching too much televisionmore…. However, this particular track has the Asian influences that are missing on many of the others...something they seem to have moved away from after the departure of Mark Jannsen who formed symphonic metal band Epica."Two Sides" shows the power of Floor's voice, and it's certainly their strongest asset. I can appreciate the male grunts here...they aren't too free-flowing (apart from on "Blind Pain", one to avoid if you don't like too much growling), and despite my dislike for them normally, they blend very attractively with the female vocals in that infamous "Beauty and The Beast" manner. This is especially noticeable on Through Square Eyes.After Forever have experienced great success in the female-fronted metal circle, without straying too far away from their original sound. They are, as far as these bands go, very original, and deserve every success they have. Definitely something to check out!
