The Amboy Dukes are a band often overlooked when it comes to lists of key psychedelic bands from the late 60s. However the combined song writing talents of Ted Nugent and Steve Farmer certainly made the Dukes one of the most original bands of the era. Chances are many will have heard their major hit 'Journey to the center of the mind' (and quite rightly so as it was a psychedelic masterpiece) yet this album provides a perfect overview to The Dukes most productive time, 1967-68. This compilation takes you on a journey from their psychedlic drenched songs such as 'Down On Phillipsmore… Escalator' and 'Saint Phillips Friend' to their heavier, rockier tracks such as 'Dr.Slingshot', 'Flight Of The Bird' and 'Loaded For Bear'. This album has simply continued to grow on me and seems to provide something different every time it blasts out of my stereo. The swirling guitars and intense energy captured within the album ensures it certainly does take you on a journey to the center of the mind. Furthermore with tracks such as 'Why Is A Carrot More Orange Than An Orange', it is difficult not to be intrigued by the Dukes. You should not miss out on the magic of the Amboy Dukes.
