Mott the Hoople - Mott (1973) Retail CD
Rock & Roll
After David Bowie convinced them to reform, and wrote them the hit song and a anthem to every generation - "All the Young Dudes", Mott felt recharged and ready to take on the studio again. There re-arrival came at the peak of glam rock, but glam they are not. Ian Hunter really shows his brilliance as a lyricist here, some unforgettable lines like the famous - "you look like a star, but your still on the dole" from All the Way From Memphis, to the Dylan - esque 'Hymn for the Dudes' and 'I wish I Was your Mother'. These songs and especially Hunters voice sound absolutely timeless, and Mick Ralphsmore… on guitar best known for his work in Bad Company, would never top the licks and hooks he filled the groves with on this record. The only criticism with this record is its poor conversion onto disk, the bass sounds extremely crass, and in some places the mixing really ruins the magic of the track, however it still is worth getting this album, along with Mojo's 'An introduction to Mott the Hoople'.
