Description

After a 12-year hiatus, the sweet-voiced Wilson Phillips trio returned to the studio to produce California, a collection of covers from the late 60s and early 70s Californian soft folk-rock movement. All the big names of the genre are represented here, including Joni Mitchell, the Eagles, Jackson Browne and Neil Young. Each track offers a mixture of soulful harmonies, twangy guitars and a exquisitely arranged orchestra all pulled together by the excellent production of Peter Asher (Jane's older brother and one half of 60s pop duo Peter and Gordon). The girls treat the songs with the utmost respectmore…, while giving them a modern edge. Their take on Mitchell's "California" captures the smoothness of the original with a laid back baritone guitar gently strumming away in the background. Homage is paid to their respective fathers, a cover of the the Mamas and the Papas "Monday Monday" (penned by John Phillips--Chynna and Carnie's dad), is a Bangles-esque bop-along number with driving organs and drums. The album closes with two Beach Boys covers (co-penned by Brian Wilson--Wendy's dad). "Dance Dance Dance" makes you want to do exactly that, while "In My Room" (featuring dad, Brian on vocals and piano) rounds off the album very nicely with its simple single piano and three part harmonies. This is a very pleasant album, featuring some of the most well-crafted songs of the last 40 years. At times it could probably be said that it is a little over produced. But few could deny that these three children of rock can belt out a tune. --James Clarkson
