Description

Although Scream is 22-year-old Luton lad Mark Joseph's debut album, this isn't the first time this particularly appetising cache of Oasis-indebted rock tunes has seen the light of day. An estimably resourceful kind of guy, Scream was originally issued in 2003 on Mark Joseph's own label having been recorded at limited expense in his dining room with Joseph playing all the instruments himself. The shoestring boy done good, as two UK hit singles will testify. Better still, with newly acquired major label backing, he's now re-recorded the whole of Scream in Los Angeles with producer Marc Tanner (Themore… Calling, Cheap Trick) and string arranger Paul Buckmaster (Jayhawks, Elton John, 10000 Maniacs) thereby augmenting the songs with a richer and more cogent production quality while sustaining the ear-catching practicality of the original arrangements. He's singing better too, therefore adding certitude to such Richard Ashcroft-style swayers as "Get Through" and "Fly" as well as to the Gallagher-esque stomp of "Moody Blues". Yes, Scream is derivative in parts, but Joseph is young enough and talented enough to sprout forth from the confines of this Brit-rock plant pot. And judging by "Give Me"--an audaciously moody brew of Roy Orbison, Beach Boys and 10cc--he's already started. --Kevin Maidment
