Description
I discovered Uriah Heep back in 1970 and was hooked. I could hardly wait for the next album - that is until the sad departures of singer, David Byron and bassist, Gary Thain. Although the band continued, I did not like the 'post-Byron' sound and generally lost interest, although those first few albums with favourites such as Gypsy, Sunrise, July Morning, to name but three, continued to receive an occasional nostalgic airing. Mild curiosity prompted me to look at 'Future Echoes of the Past'. This graduated to "I think I'll buy it!" when I discovered it was a live album from 2001 and those old favouritesmore… were still there among much more recent additions. OK, I'd not heard Heep with Phil Lanzon on keyboards or Bernie Shaw on vocals, but the old rearguard of Messrs Box, Kerslake & Bolder seemed to be hanging in there. As soon as I slipped the album into the CD player, Wow...I believe that the band rate this as good as the Live 1973 album. In my opinion, it's even better. Bernie Shaw is a tremendously verstile vocalist whose excellent delivery of the old favourites, sounds uncannily like David Byron. As to the contents of this double album, we have a very well-balanced set of 21 songs + bonus track. The oldies on the set include: Sweet Freedom, Stealin', Rain, Sunrise, Easy Livin', Look at Yourself, Bird of Prey and Gypsy, which like good wine, seem to have improved with age. The rest of the set is made up with songs from the two most recent studio albums and shows off the songwriting talents of Box, Lanzon, Bolder & Kerslake (most of the earlier numbers were penned partly by Ken Hensley!). How well they stand beside those old classics! The show 'kicks off' with Between Two Worlds and I Hear Voices, two powerful numbers from the album, Sonic Origami. The rest of the set is a nice balance of old, new, electric and acoustic. Of the acoustic numbers, Question is worth a special mention as it shows off in particular, the talents of Bolder on Bass as well as giving Shaw an opportunity to prove what a superb singer he is, especially when a quieter delivery is needed. Generally, I found the album a rare treat as there wasn't a single number which I didn't enjoy. I can't help feeling that if the music media didn't use age of performers as a yardstick with which to judge quality of music, then this album would have received tremendous reviews, but alas it seems to be one of those little gems to have slipped largely unnoticed into the dark corners of music stores while the critics continue to tell us that Heep should have retired years ago. What a great pity! In my opinion this is one hell of an album.
