The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Framed (1972) Retail CD
In the beginning there was this geeza called Alex Harvey and he had a band. Not just any band, but a sensational band. This album was the first studio offering from SAHB and it is a stormer. Although the production is a little on the rough side by todays standards that doesn't stop this from being a great collection of rock n roll songs and a must for any rockers album collection. The album opens with the Leiber/Stoller song 'Framed' which Alex had made his own just like Frank Sinatra with My way or Thin Lizzy with Whiskey in the jar. This is followed up by the re-recording of earlier Harvey materialmore… such as 'Hammer song' and 'Midnight Moses', the latter of these IS a rock classic. Then we have the strange and eerie Isobel Goudie, which is about a witch from Alness who reputably slept with the devil and was burnt at the stake. Alex always liked to tell stories and most of his own songs were in the form of characters out of these stories. Buffs bar blues takes us away from the hard rock music and shows us how good and adaptable this band can be. This is a boogie blues number set around a Glasgow bar. The second cover on the album is Willie Dixon's 'I just want to make love to you' which has a number of interesting key changes and is backed up by Big Buds brass section who help build the song up to a tremendous climax with their horn riffs. Alex proves once again that white men can sing the blues. 'Hole in her stocking' is a very danceable rock ' n' roll song and 'Theres no lights...' is yet another Alex story about a 20's gangster getting his comuppance. In true Alex style this is done with plenty of humour as Alex turned it into a sort of Christmas song. The last song, is 'st. Anthony' and they don't get much heavier than this. years ahead of it's time this album strips away all the gloss and put the rock back into rock n roll. This record was recorded in just a few days of studio time and was two fingers up to it's contemporarys of the time.
