With the hip-hop scene saturated with a plethora of new artists every day, a rap group on their third album are gonna face an uphill struggle. Add to the equation the fact that two members of the group have left and the hill starts turning into a mountain. Possible solution: get your A-list friends and contemporaries on board to spout a few rhythms? Well no, not if you're Imani and Brown from the Pharcyde who turn out a record that more than sits easily with their reputation as purveyors of playful and inventive hip-hop. "Rush" marks new territory with a string-driven 1950s musical backbone thatmore… gets whipped around by clinical beats for the fellas to release their skewed flows over. While elsewhere the lethal "Network" sees the Pharcyde cutting it up over a jagged break with little sign of missing their former sparing partners. However, it's the mellow end of things which the remaining duo handle best, be it either the soulful back room flava of "Misery", or the languid rap drawl and gospel-tinged chorus of "World" which comes full of subdued power--a rarity in rap and one, like the rest of the album, to undoubtedly savour. --Manish Aurora
