Description

The problem with "Byrdmaniax" is that it is over produced by Terry Melcher and Chris Hinshaw. This CD reissue with its three bonus tracks clearly proves this point by providing an alternative take of "Pale Blue" that strips away most of that overdubbing. Just play the two versions back to back and hear the difference for yourself. I could never understand why anybody would want to add background singers to a Bryds album, but here they are along with lots of strings and horns overwhelming the songs. This is too bad because there are some songs with some edge on this album with Roger McGuinn's "more…I Wanna Grow Up to Be a Politician" and Skip Battin's "Citizen Kane" that really suffer form the overdubbing. On "I Trust" and "Kathleen's Song" the Byrds almost sound like the Byrds, but not quite, and it is not just a question of missing David Crosby (Clarence White with his nice guitar solos buried under the overdubs and Gene Parsons are the other two masks on the cover). The bonus tracks include yet another Bob Dylan song, "Just Like a Woman." What we have with "Byrdmaniax" was never going to be a great Bryds album, but with all the junk added in production it ends up missing the opportunity to be a good Byrds album as well.
