1992: It was all about what you said and the way you said it. MCing was still an art taken seriously, and rap still had the capacity to shock and excite. After their excellent 1990 debut 'One For All', Brand Nubian lost their 'star' MC Grand Puba, but gained a harder edge, combining raw hip-hop with a 5 percenter mentality. Misunderstood and condemned at the time for a fairly hardline stance on racial issues and some strongly homophobic content, 'In God We Trust' nevertheless stands as the most consistant statement by the Nubians to date. While politically very much of it's time, this disk ismore… still fresh sounding, mainly due to it's bass-heavy East-Coast beats and the ever inventive styling of Sadat X whose ability to twist rhythm and vocabulary will have you reaching for the rewind button. Whether you prefer the ominous warning of 'Pass The Gat', the disrespectful but hilarious 'Steal Ya 'Ho', the steel-edged rap ballard 'Love Me Or Leave Me Alone' or the attack on sell-out black policemen 'Black And Blue', a wealth of top-flight wordplay awaits you. Perhaps the two masterpieces are also the most difficult for 'liberal' listeners, 'The Godz' and 'Punks Jump Up To Get Down'. Just about everybody gets a bashing, but it's worth listening a hundred times just to see how they do it. East Coast Rap was at it's height in '92, and these guys were absolutly on top of the game. Sometimes art comes in suprising packages, and can seem tough to ears accustomed to gimmick rappers spouting ghost-written love poems to their cars. How many of you can honestly claim to listen to more than half of the tracks on any hip-hop album produced in the last couple of years? Give this 'angry' masterpiece a chance to show you what real MCing is about and the fast forward button will soon stop being your best friend! The beats slam, the rhyming will leave you gasping, and you'll find yourself repeating whole verses to your friends. Listen, learn and love it,.... or leave it alone.
