While "Like a Virgin" had completed it's course to make her a major player on the Pop music scene, raising her has a modern day Monroe albeit a little more shall we say `vulgar' in her sexuality which was slightly, but not too, shocking, it's successor "True Blue" took her from "a pop tart", Her own words, to bonafide Superstar. A new image was harnessed, she stripped awaymore… the Harlot look of old and replaced it with a Classy look which brought to mind Old Hollywood. This time the controversy was, a little, more serious with lyrical themes including social issues such as Abortion and Abuse. The sound was in many respects the evolution of "Like a Virgin" synths, electronic drum, strings etc. it was set to be great sadly the outcome was distinctly average.

"Papa don't Preach" at the time of writing is a Madonna classic its Drama and strings combined with the lyrical theme are truly explosive. The seemingly Anti-Abortion lyrics were condemned for supposedly condoning Teenage sex added to the brew Madonna's own well documented tensions with her own Catholic father and the result was bound to over turn the apple cart. The Sean Penn inspired "Open your Heart" ranks among the best Pop songs of Madonna's career. The sheer force of it's power drives like a woman of such determination that it's almost awe inspiring. "nothing can stop me" she sings the listener slightly terrified. "White Heat" opens with a quote from the namesake film "top o the world ma!" would have been more fitting. The song is typical 80's affair slightly Latino in some part but mostly uninteresting ditto the shockingly bad "Where's the Party". "Live to Tell" is honest and frank in its melodramatic way, the vocals and lyrics giving an insight into the real Madonna a feat which would wait until "Like a Prayer" to be fuller explored. It is quite moving. "True Blue" is genius in its simplicity and winking nod to 50's girl bands. Interestingly enough it was once regarded as Madonna's greatest Single triumph though its lack of inclusion on "The Immaculate Collection" contributed to it's slow demise. "La Isla Bonita" is the standout track here and a #1 single, rumoured to be a Michael Jackson rejection, one can only imagine if he had accepted it what the outcome would be. The album is closed with "Jimmy Jimmy" and "Love makes the world go round". The latter being good hearted but ultimately flawed the former being inexcusable; I will entertain it no more other than to say it is the worst recording of her musical career.

The singles released from this Record were excellent being "Live to Tell", Papa don't Preach", "True Blue", "Open your Heart" and "La Isla Bonita" the rest simply put is filler. The ground-braking videos and accompanying controversy kept her in the spotlight as did her personal life in part it is this that caused this Albums astonishing success. Dedicated to Sean Penn "The coolest guy in the universe"...........they later divorced.
