Description

This album was as a substantial breath of fresh air to me when it came out in 1988. After a lengthy period of substandard albums, briefly halted by Find Out in 1985, ITBCOT put Stanley back on the jazz map. Put simply, fans who were seduced by the over-the-top bass of Journey To Love and School Days are going to love this. Working Man is an update of Lopsu Lu from Stanley's first album and features a ridiculous piccolo bass solo leaning very heavily towards John Coltrane's 'sheets of sound' approach. There are two rather dispensable duets with Gregory Hines on tapdancing(!)more… but luckily they don't outstay their welcome. Allan Holdsworth and Stewart Copeland deliver excellent guest spots on Stories To Tell, as does Freddie Hubbard on Jam and Lewis's Funny How Time Flies (yes, the Janet Jackson song). Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is graced with a typically majestic Wayne Shorter soprano sax solo, and Stanley brings the funk with a great take-off of Roger Troutman on I Want To Play For Ya. Finally, Tradition may feature Stanley's finest recorded playing bar none and highlights a large John McLaughlin influence.In a much-maligned genre of music, 80s fusion, this is a rare classic that deserves critical reappraisal. Chock-a-block with formidable guest spots and featuring some of Stanley's most in-your-face playing, it's well worth checking.
