What are you people on about? This is a great album! Everybody was expecting another 'endtroducing' but i guess Shadow has moved on from that and wanted to try something different. Granted, it's not as original and a far cry from endtroducing but theres some great tracks on here. I gave the album a full listen on release and tended to agree with most of the reviews but yesterday i decided to give it another crack and i havn't stopped listening to it since.
After the second track it takes a turn towards a rap style which although they can be a bit difficult to digest you have to remember that rapmore… and hiphop has always influenced his music in one way or another, infact, if it wasn't for this style being around then we may never of heard of DJ Shadow.
Then comes a turn with track 8 'broken levee blues' a great mellow guitar and bass tune you just wouldn't expect from the guy. Track 9 is the only track i liked when i first heard the album, an upbeat punky, guitary tune which i loved at first but now after giving the whole album a few listens it just doesnt fit, it should'nt be there, for me it's more of a 'b-side' tune found on one of his singles.
Track 10 'backstage girl' is a great track, a spoken word song about an unlikely groupy with a sound that would'nt be out of place on a led zeppelin album, for me it's the best song of the album, it's a million miles from the usual shadow stuff but thank god it is.
Track 11 brings ehcos of the shadow we all know and love but missing any of his funky beats.
Track 12 is ok, quite a grungy, indie sound to it and same with 'erase you' but better.
Skip 14, dont know what he was thinking there.
track 15 'you made' it feat chris james continues the indie sound but qiute a lovely tune.
Then its back to the rap which ruins the flow leaving me feeling confused!
In all i get the impression that shadow's heart and mind is in a few different styles at the moment which he needs to get out of his system, this album is like listening to jay z then onto zeppelin then onto coldplay then dr dre (not necessarily those artists but you get my drift).
Shadow may even be lacking that creative style he once had, most great artists produce their best stuff with the first 2 albums then they seem to wane but i really think alot more credit is deserved for this album and if you have a copy get it out and give a few more goes.
